2025 Ford Mustang Overview

Now in its second year, the seventh-generation 2025 Ford Mustang continues the path it started back in the 1960s: providing a truly American take on the sporty coupe experience. Variety remains a key part of its success, with the 2025 Mustang available in different levels of power, from a 315-horsepower turbo four-cylinder to a 480-horsepower 5.0-liter V-8—not to mention the sportier 500-horsepower Mustang Dark Horse.

The latter two can be optioned with a six-speed manual transmission instead of the standard 10-speed automatic, but the turbo four comes only with an automatic. The traditional fastback coupe and soft-top convertible body styles return for 2025, and it wouldn’t be a Mustang without joining in the celebrated American automotive tradition of special editions. The latest is the 2025 60th Anniversary Edition, which will be limited to 1965 units in honor of the year it was introduced—though it actually went on sale in April 1964 as a 1965 model.

Regardless, the fun spirit of the Mustang remains, offering stylish, sporty transportation for two—or three or four, if they don’t mind squeezing into the small back seats. With the Chevy Camaro out of production and the Dodge Challenger getting redesigned with only inline-six or electric engine options, the Mustang is the last V-8–powered domestic pony car left.

2025 Ford Mustang Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The Mustang’s base engine is a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder EcoBoost, delivering 315 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque, paired only with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

Interestingly, this is slightly less powerful than the previous generation’s EcoBoost Performance, which had 330 horsepower. While this setup performs well, the 5.0-liter V-8 is truly the soul of the Mustang. It boasts 480 horsepower and 415 pound-feet of torque and can be equipped with either the 10-speed automatic or a preferred six-speed manual transmission. Ford claims that an optional performance exhaust boosts output to 486 horsepower and 481 pound-feet.

The Mustang Dark Horse is a more track-focused variant, featuring a 500-horsepower version of the 5.0-liter V-8. Building on the legacy of the previous generation’s Mach 1, it includes adaptive dampers and 19-inch Pirelli P Zero PZ4 tires, with the option to upgrade to even stickier Pirelli Trofeo RS track tires via a handling package.

Ford has consistently improved the Mustang’s ride and handling with each generation, and the latest model continues this trend with enhancements in steering feel and feedback. The Dark Horse’s standard adaptive dampers significantly mitigate the harshness often associated with performance cars equipped with track-oriented tires.

2025 Ford Mustang 0–60 MPH Times

At our test track, a Mustang GT equipped with the performance exhaust system accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in 4.2 seconds. The EcoBoost model wasn’t far behind, reaching 60 mph in 4.5 seconds. The Dark Horse, despite being more powerful, managed to shave only a tenth of a second off the GT’s time, hitting 60 mph in 4.1 seconds. However, it excelled in the quarter-mile, finishing in 12.5 seconds at 115 mph. The Dark Horse also impressed in our 0-to-150-to-0 speed test, completing it in 29.7 seconds, outperforming a Toyota Supra 3.0.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

The EPA estimates that the four-cylinder 2025 Ford Mustang achieves 22 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway. Opting for the Performance Package reduces these numbers to 21 mpg city and 29 mpg highway. The previous generation’s V-8 Mustang, with an automatic transmission, was rated at 15 mpg city and 24 mpg highway.

The current V-8 Mustang with an automatic transmission shows a slight improvement, with EPA estimates of 16 mpg city and 24 mpg highway; choosing the manual transmission lowers both figures by 1 mpg. The Dark Horse is rated at 14 mpg city and 22 mpg highway, regardless of transmission. In our real-world testing, a GT model with a six-speed manual achieved 24 mpg on our 75-mph highway fuel economy route, while the EcoBoost model with the automatic transmission returned 32 mpg.

2025 Ford Mustang Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The Mustang’s interior design blends new and retro elements. The seats are very supportive, and the standard 12.4-inch instrument cluster is a significant improvement over the previous model. This configurable display can be customized with different colors, gauges, and even a “calm” screen that shows only essential information. For those feeling nostalgic, the display can mimic the analog gauges of the 1987 Mustang, and a 1967-inspired analog screen is available as an over-the-air update for all seventh-generation models. Ambient lighting and the driver’s display adjust to the selected drive mode.

Base Mustangs come with cloth seats and optional micro-suede vinyl inserts, while the Premium trim adds stitched accents to the door trim and dashboard. The Mustang GT features leather inserts. A notable new feature is the Remote Rev function, which lets you rev the engine with a click of the key fob, allowing you to enjoy the engine sounds from outside the car.

2025 Ford Mustang Infotainment and Connectivity

The 2024 redesign introduced several enhancements to the Mustang’s interior technology. An available 13.2-inch infotainment screen using Ford’s Sync 4 software seamlessly extends from the gauge cluster to the center of the car behind a curved glass panel.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, and an optional wireless smartphone charger helps keep the interior tidy by reducing cable clutter. Amazon Alexa and Ford Streaming enable voice commands to replace traditional controls, and every Mustang is equipped with Ford Power-Up software, allowing for over-the-air updates to improve software and vehicle functions over time.
