2025 Porsche Macan Overview: Gas vs Electric Models, Performance, Comfort, and More
Porsche Macan Overview
In 2025, there are two Porsche Macan models. The gas-powered version continues without major changes, and it’s based on a design that is now more than ten years old. The electric version arrived during the summer of 2024 and is completely different. Still, all Macans are small luxury SUVs designed to fully put the “sport” in sport-utility. If you’re looking for comfort and cargo space, you might want to consider another vehicle. If you want to go fast and have fun while sometimes carrying other people and larger items, the 2025 Macan is the right car for you.
Why are there two different Macans?
The new all-electric Macan is not Porsche’s first electric vehicle, but it is the first of the automaker’s existing models to switch from gasoline to electricity. So, Porsche is continuing to sell both versions side by side, giving its customers a choice between the two types of engines. Will this gas and electric strategy continue in the future? Don’t count on a gas-powered version of the second-generation Macan because Porsche builds it on a special EV platform. Still, we give Porsche credit for offering consumers a choice.
Expert Rating
The Porsche Macan is the class benchmark for performance. It has agile handling and an overall feel that’s more sports car than luxury SUV. Unfortunately, the Macan is pricey—especially when you add options from Porsche’s seemingly endless list—and lacks cargo space. Acceleration from the base four-cylinder engine is also unimpressive.
Porsche Macan Performance 8.0/10
How does the Macan drive?
The Porsche Macan feels every bit like a Porsche on a twisty road. The way it stops, steers, and handles gives you complete confidence, and it’s a joy to drive along uncrowded backroads. However, there’s a significant difference in acceleration between the base four-cylinder engine and the available V6. The Macan T we tested, which has the four-cylinder, sprinted from 0 to 60 mph in a respectably quick 5.5 seconds.
However, that’s the number we recorded at our test track when using the Macan’s launch control system and Porsche’s Sport Response feature (a system that primes the engine to give max power). In typical driving, the four-cylinder engine is more sluggish. Other more powerful trims like the S and GTS are significantly more satisfying, and true enthusiasts should likely start their search for their ideal Macan there.
Porsche Macan Comfort 7.5/10
How comfortable is the Macan?
The Porsche Macan has a firmer ride than most other small luxury SUVs. You’ll feel bumps and imperfections in the road, but it’s not harsh or uncomfortable. Models equipped with the available air suspension have a smoother ride; it’s worth getting if comfort is a priority. The front seats follow a similar theme. The base front seats are firm, lack adjustability, and are not the best for long drives. Seats with more adjustability are available, but it’s unfortunate that you have to pay extra for them.
The climate system works, and the controls are easy to use, but the placement of the vents means it’s occasionally hard to feel the air coming into the cabin. You’ll also be able to hear the fans whirring. Road and wind noise isn’t as well muted as in other luxury SUVs, and the base four-cylinder engine can sound rough at times.
Porsche Macan Interior 7.5/10
How’s the interior?
The Macan’s gloss black center panel features backlit icons that act as touch-sensitive buttons. It works well enough, but the large slab of piano black attracts fingerprints almost instantly, giving the panel a greasy look that cheapens the interior. Beyond that, though, the materials are top-notch, and the driving position is low and easy to adjust. It makes you feel like this is a sporty place to be, as any good Porsche should.
The rear is a different story. Getting into the back can be cumbersome for larger adults and those with limited mobility. The narrow door opening and sloping roof mean you’re likely to bump your head on the way in, and once seated, you’ll notice knee and shoulder room are seriously lacking. Other SUVs in the class offer a more comfortable and accommodating back seat.
Aspect | Description |
Center Panel | Gloss black with backlit touch-sensitive buttons; prone to fingerprints, giving a greasy appearance. Materials are high-quality. |
Driving Position | Low and easily adjustable, enhancing the sporty feel typical of Porsche. |
Rear Seat Accessibility | Cumbersome for larger adults and those with limited mobility due to narrow door opening and sloping roof. |
Rear Seat Comfort | Limited knee and shoulder room compared to competitors in its class, which offer more space and comfort in the back seat. |
Porsche Macan Technology 7.0/10
How’s the tech?
The Macan’s center touchscreen has sharp graphics and is easy to use. That said, there’s nothing truly standout about the Macan’s technology. Its voice recognition isn’t as intuitive as what you’d find in equivalent BMW or Mercedes models. Both of those brands do a better job of integrating Apple CarPlay, while the Porsche only uses about 60% of the display’s real estate for it. Smartphone integration was also slightly unreliable in our testing, and we needed to restart our test iPhone several times to get wireless Apple CarPlay to work properly.
Our test car also had driver aids that could use some refinement. The lane-keeping assistance feature didn’t keep our Macan within the lane as well as it should have, and the parking sensors were far too sensitive, leaving massive gaps between the Porsche and any nearby obstacles.
Aspect | Description |
Center Touchscreen | Sharp graphics, easy to use |
Technology Standout | Lacks standout features compared to BMW or Mercedes |
Voice Recognition | Not as intuitive as competitors |
Apple CarPlay Integration | Uses only 60% of display’s real estate |
Smartphone Integration | Slightly unreliable; required multiple iPhone restarts for wireless Apple CarPlay to work properly |
Driver Aids | Lane-keeping assistance struggled to keep the Macan within its lane; parking sensors overly sensitive, leaving large gaps between the vehicle and obstacles |
Porsche Macan Storage 6.0/10
How’s the storage?
A common criticism of the Macan is its size, or rather, the lack of it. With just 17.2 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row, the Macan’s cargo area is very small for its class. The BMW X3, for instance, offers 28.7 cubic feet of space with the rear seats up, and even a Volkswagen Golf GTI offers more room.
Small items won’t have a much easier time finding a place either. There isn’t a good spot to put your phone except the center console, the cupholders are too small, and your wallet and other items will likely fill up the door bins quickly.
Got kids? The rear seat isn’t as spacious as those in other small SUVs, but it’s still large enough to accommodate a rear-facing child safety seat (as long as you don’t have the front seats slid back too much). There are Isofix anchors on the outboard seats that are easily found beneath plastic covers.
Porsche Macan Fuel Economy 7.5/10
How’s the fuel economy?
The Macan is about average in terms of fuel efficiency. According to the EPA, the Macan should get 19 mpg combined or 21 mpg combined, depending on which engine you have and which trim you choose. Pleasingly, we recorded 23 mpg combined from our four-cylinder Macan T on our evaluation test route, indicating that the EPA’s numbers should be achievable in real-world situations.
Porsche Macan Value 7.0/10
Is the Macan a good value?
It’s difficult to argue that the Macan represents good value. It’s smaller than most other vehicles in its class, and base models come with Porsche’s least powerful engine. Porsche also excludes many features that BMW and Mercedes typically include as standard. While it drives and feels like a Porsche and is unquestionably well-built, the premium price tag can be hard to justify. Moreover, Porsche’s warranty is average compared to other luxury automakers.
Porsche Macan Wildcard 7.5/10
Whether good or bad, the Macan is one of Porsche’s best-selling models today. However, despite their similar appearance, only a small group of enthusiasts will notice the differences between the base model and the high-end GTS. Base models are also priced too high for the features and performance they offer, while more powerful versions come with a significant premium.
That being said, whether it’s the Macan T, S, or GTS, driving it day-to-day is enjoyable and it serves as a satisfying companion. Just don’t expect the same level of attention from onlookers that other Porsche owners often receive.
Porsche Macan Safety and Driver-Assistance Features
The Macan offers a range of driver-assistance technologies, though very few are included as standard. For detailed crash-test results, you can visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites. Key safety features include:
- Standard lane-departure warning
- Available automated emergency braking
- Available adaptive cruise control
Porsche Macan Competitors
Porsche has regularly updated the gas-powered Macan over the past 10 years, and both the design and engineering have held up well. However, it’s still worth considering similarly sleek and performance-oriented compact luxury SUVs. Competitors include the Alfa Romeo Stelvio, Audi SQ5 Sportback, BMW X4 M40i and X4 M, and the Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 Coupe.
