The 2022 Ford EcoSport is a small SUV that comes with all-wheel drive and can tow up to 2000 pounds. These are its best features. Even before Ford decided to stop making it—because of changes in their business plans—the EcoSport had a hard time competing with other small SUVs. Many of its competitors are nicer to drive, have better interiors, and use less fuel.
The EcoSport was never a great deal, and things got worse with the arrival of the Ford Maverick pickup. The Maverick is more practical, costs less, and uses less fuel.
The main reasons to consider the 2022 EcoSport are its high driving position and ease of maneuvering. Otherwise, it’s better to look at other options.
Engine, Transmission, and Performance
The 2022 EcoSport comes with a 166-horsepower four-cylinder engine, a six-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive. Despite these specs, it’s not very fast. The EcoSport performs better at low speeds, making it easy to navigate through busy streets. However, the steering feels vague, and the ride can be noisy, which takes away from the driving experience.
The ride quality is mixed. While it doesn’t do a great job of keeping the cabin quiet over rough surfaces, the soft suspension in the Titanium model does provide some comfort by cushioning passengers from bumps. Unfortunately, this soft suspension also causes excessive body motions, especially at higher speeds, making the ride feel unstable. The brake pedal in the front-drive Titanium model feels soft but responds consistently.
One of the EcoSport’s few strengths is its towing capacity of 2000 pounds, which is higher than what most other small SUVs can tow.

The EcoSport interior is functional instead of fashionable, which we can appreciate on the cheaper models. Too bad the cabin quality is underwhelming on top trims that cost nearly $30,000. Meanwhile, there’s ample passenger space up front but not so much in back. Compared with the classy cabins of the Kona and the Kia Soul, the tiny Ford’s interior disappoints.
The leather-wrapped steering wheel felt rubbery, and most of the plastic surfaces felt hard and hollow. The SES model dresses up things with exclusive leather-and-cloth seats as well as copper-colored trim pieces. Despite its diminutive size, the EcoSport has competitive cargo space and storage.
Most test results were average; the Ford proved itself a useful, albeit compact, travel companion with a few handy tricks. It held fewer carry-on suitcases than the Rogue Sport and the Honda HR-V but had higher capacity than the other similar competitors. The EcoSport has an assortment of interior storage spots, but none are very large. A sealable vent in the glovebox connects with the vehicle’s air conditioner to create a climate-controlled compartment.
